Joint mission from agencies visits camp

A joint assessment mission comprising officers of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), World Food Program and AMDA-Nepal visited camps.

The team mainly discussed on the issues of malnutrition in camps. "We are really proud that the malnutrition rate is lower in camps as compared to local communities", said Dr. Talmur Hussian of UNHCR.

Dr. Bhampa Rai, a senior Bhutanese surgeon also attended the discussion, where Harka Bahadur Rai from Refugee Coordination Unit (RCU) presented a seven-point demand paper asking agencies to increase assistances to exiled Bhutanese.

The other demands included possible support to those registered at RCU in Chandragadi but staying outside camps, incentives to members of camp management committee, allowances to officers of RCU, salary raise of salary holders working in camps, protection of children and vulnerable families, and possible support to local people at camps' proximity. The mission also visited hospitals and basic health units in camp.

YOB cadres donate blood

Bhutan People’s Party-affiliated Youth Organization of Bhutan (YOB) has organized blood donation camp on June 20 in Beldangi II to mark World Refugee Day-2008.

Issuing a press statement, President of YOB Rajen Giri said that altogether 52 exiled youths, mostly its own members, donated blood to Bhutanese Refugee Primary Health Care Project under AMDA-Nepal that looks after the health and sanitation of exiled Bhutanese.

The release further expressed gratitude to Mamta Giri and Phal Man Rai for their financial contribution to organize the camp.

“YOB extends its sincere thanks to Camp Management Committee of Beldangi-II and volunteers from Youth Friendly Center for their valuable contribution and assistance”, reads the statement.
